Multi-Level Marketing Affiliate Programs

Multi-level marketing affiliate programs, often called network marketing, is a well known method of making money on the internet. They are also often referred to as mlm programs. The basic approach can be summarized as follows:

recruiting leads
selling the product or service to those leads who become part of your downline
continuing to use the product or service yourself
creating clones of yourself via your downline through ongoing training

The products and services that multi-level marketing affiliate programs promote is varied indeed, ranging through books on self help, health and wellness products, fashion jewellery, health advocacy to adult enertainment systems - the list is almost endless.

Let me be clear here - I am not attempting to discredit any particular product or service. That's way outside my field of expertise and my experience. Rather, I am criticisng the basic foundation upon which multi-level marketing affiliate programs are based.

For the sake of simplicity I am using "mlm" as the general description of these types of programs. The major issues with all these mlm programs are:

People hate cold calling. They soon run out of friends and family to whom they can promote and they find it difficult to generate leads. Without leads they have no business. Therefore the rest of the scheme doesn't come into play.
Following on from the point above, people are then reduced to buying leads and there are plenty of shysters who are waiting to take advantage of you. They either sell you old leads or expensive unique leads who may have little or no interest in mlm.
Many of these mlm programs are based on offline marketing methods that are not effective in an internet environment
Governments tend to regulate mlm programs pretty tightly because of the danger of pyramid schemes which are illegal. This inhibits people in their approach to bulding their business
The parent companies marketing the product or service betray little understanding of how the internet works. For example, many of them provide websites for all their members - as if thousands of web sites, all the same, are ever going to achieve anythng - they are simply ignored by the search engines. Therefore little or no traffic equals no leads equals no business.

So, it's a pretty depressing scene!
